Carnival March to Save Lewisham Libraries

From Rio* to Catford

Dear Save Sydenham Library Campaign supporter

Carnival March to Save Lewisham Libraries Sat 30th October. Assemble Crofton Park Library 12.15pm.

Thank you to all of you who came to last Monday’s public meeting at Livesey Hall.  I think the officers who attended were made well aware of the feelings of local residents about the threat to our library.

Our petition has now passed the 4,500 signatures mark and is still climbing!  A figure of 5.000 is within reach and the combined petition from campaigners from all five libraries under threat of closure is very close to reaching 20,000 signatures – the largest petition presented to Lewisham Council in living memory.

We understand that local schools are also petitioning against closure as their pupils pay regular visits to Sydenham Library each week.  Some of the children are also writing letters to the Mayor explaining why they think the library should remain open.

Apart from continuing to collect signatures to be presented to the Mayor on Wednesday 3 November there is one further major event which is currently being planned.

This is a “Carnival” type procession from Crofton Library to Lewisham Town Hall, Catford, to demonstrate the strength of feeling borough-wide about the threatened cuts.

This will take place on Saturday, 30 October starting at 12.30 pm from Crofton Park Library. We plan that it will be a light-hearted event with everyone wearing brightly coloured clothes; anyone wishing to dress up as a book character will be most welcome.

Please arrive at Crofton Park Library by 12.15pm.

This will be a bells and whistles type march with, we hope, some music to cheer us on our way.  It is planned that we arrive at Lewisham Town Hall at 1.30 pm where we will rally and speakers will address the crowd.  The event will be finished by 2.30pm.

The route is, as yet, unconfirmed as this is currently being discussed with Lewisham Police, and I’ll update you when this is known.

Crofton Park Library is at the junction of Darfield Road and Brockely Road SE4 and the nearest station is Crofton Park.  Honor Oak Park and Brockley stations are also within easy walking distance.  It is also served by bus  routes 122, 171, 172. and P4 all of which stop close by.

Please click on this link to see it on Streetmap: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=536654&Y=174736&A=Y&Z=110

In the meantime please keep up the pressure with collecting as many petition signatures as possible and by writing letters to the Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, at Lewisham Town Hall, Catford, SE46 4RU (by internal post at Sydenham Library– no stamp required) or by email
steve.bullock@lewisham.gov.uk

Looking forward to seeing you on 30 October
